Gay Bars – Brighton

By: Jim S Smith

Brighton is known as a major gay and lesbian destination for visitors from both the UK and around the world. The city has many gay bars to choose from. The main ‘gay village’ is called Kemptown and is located in the centre of the city. This area of Brighton has numerous bars and clubs located close to each other, centered around St James’ Street.

There are lounge type bars such as Legends and the Zone to cabaret bars including the Queens Arms, to ‘crusier type gay bars like the Bulldog. There are also local gay bars outside of the Kemptown area but still within the city of Brighton and Hove. These local type gay bars tend to be popular with the very large local gay and lesbian population of Brighton and Hove.

Like the rest of the UK, smoking of cigarettes is against the law in any workplace (including bars). Some venues have outside terraces where people can smoke, without being on the street. Brighton and Hove does not allow drinking on the street unless in a designated area (such as a terrace). Both Legends and the Amsterdam (located on the Kings Road that runs along the seafront) have dedicated outside terraces.

As well a numerous bars there are also many gay clubs in Brighton, these are much larger in size than the bars and can hold up to 1000 people. The gay scene of Brighton and Hove is busier in the summer time as this is the peak tourist season, however there is still a thriving gay scene and community during the winter time.

Brighton currently has liberalized drinking laws, this means that many bars are open until very late at night. Apart from gay bars and clubs, Brighton offers gay and lesbian visitors many other attractions and things to do such as the Royal Pavilion, the Pier and the well organized and beautiful seafront. Brighton has great shopping, as well as high street chain stores there are also many specialist shops in the North Laine area.

The city has a tourist information center that is located in Bartholamew Square, near to the Town Hall. Here you will be able to ask specific questions and pick up lots of information of things to do and see in Brighton and the latest local events. The Tourist Information Center will also be able to help you find great deals on hotels and guest houses in Brighton.
