The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the busiest airport in California, and the seventh busiest in the world. Traveling through LAX can be a bit frightening. The terminals are huge, as are the crowds, and traffic outside and inside the airport can he a notoriously hazardous. Here are 10 smart traveler tips that should make your LAX experience easier and more expedient.

  1. Know what you can bring with you
Items in your checked in luggage have less restrictions, but carry-on items are strictly regulated. To avoid spending too much time at the airport security points, go to the Los Angeles World Airports website beforehand to get an updated list of items that can and can’t bring through airport security.
  2. Avoid wearing excessive jewelry
Leave the jewelry in your bags. Wearing too many metal accessories on your person will only force you to walk through the metal detectors over and over.
  3. Leave gifts unwrapped
You never know if a gift box will set off alarms or if you’ll be picked for a random search. Leave gifts unwrapped. It will save you time in case of a search and you won’t have to buy extra wrapping paper.
  4. Put I.D. tags on all bags
LAX is huge, and it can be easy to misplace your bags amidst the large, crowded terminals. Make sure you place ID tags on all your bags.
  5. Print passes at home
You can print out electronic passes at home by purchasing tickets online and visiting the airline’s website. This will save you time when it comes time to board.
  6. Use shared and public transport
LAX is already stressful, so why add to the stress by dealing with the infamous LA traffic? Use shared or public transportation to get to LAX. FlyAway airport buses leave from Union Station and Van Nuys. You can also ride the Green Line train or take the public bus, taxis and shuttle vans.
  7. Cell Phone Waiting Lot
If you are picking up a passenger at LAX, you can wait for them at the Cell Phone Waiting Lot for free. They’ll call you when they arrive and you can then drive over to the terminal curbside pick-up area.
  8. Curbside drop off
If you’re just dropping off a passenger (or getting dropped off), you can avoid dealing with LAX airport parking by using the free drop-off terminal curbside zone.
  9. Off-site Parking
If you need to park long-term, you can save a few dollars by parking at an off-site lot. These are usually less crowded and they all have free airport shuttles that take you from your car to your terminal quickly and easily.
  10. Arrive early
Arrive at the airport two hours before your scheduled boarding time. This will give you plenty of time to park if you have to and to deal with the lines and security check-points without having to get stressed out.
